When this gorgeous expectant Mama said she wanted this years’ family photos to be on a local Encinitas beach, I was super excited!

We had so much fun playing around at last year’s session. I was already being carried away with visions of her beautiful belly glowing over the rocks. Of family time splashing in the waves! And all of us soaked to our waists with water…my favorite type of beach session for families with young children! Things don’t always go quite as we plan, however. As it turned out little Lily had absolutely no desire to go anywhere near the water that day! We’re talking not even within like 50 feet of it! Hahaha….oh, toddlers! Ok, Plan B then.  

Sometimes things are just meant to be that way because Plan B couldn’t have turned out any more beautiful! By embracing what Lily did want to do instead of trying to force our expectations on her. We brought out her genuine laughter and captured those sweet loving connections that make me truly treasure my role as a photographer.

I have learned that some of my best family photos come when we let go of all the expectations we have for a shoot and let these beautiful little creatures explore in ways only childhood allows. When we engage with them by following their lead we all end up having a better time and the photos capture joyful memories of genuine connections rather than forced smiles. These are the photos we treasure forever.

And in the end…I got to fulfill my vision of a glowing mama belly and crashing waves after all… Swoon… Encinitas beach was still the right call. I love this session and I love this family!!!
